• American Tuna Biography

American Tuna was formed by six American Pole & Line fishing families in San Diego, California in 2005. The Mission of American Tuna is to provide a high quality responsibly and sustainably sourced canned albacore tuna. Using a traditional harvest and packing method, we offer the highest quality, all-natural, tuna pack on the market. American Tuna started in just two Whole Foods Markets in our hometown of San Diego and have expanded into every Whole Foods location Nationwide as well as many other organic markets, restaurants, delis, and catering companies. Our products are hand filleted & hand packed Premium Albacore Loins. The Tuna steaks are packed in the can by hand raw, sealed, and pressure-cooked, packing itself in fish oil. No added oil, water, soy, other fish, just premium albacore in its own natural fish oil. No Draining! The Fish Oil in the Can should be included with the Albacore while breaking up the Steak.

At American Tuna we have 100% Traceability for every albacore harvested, meaning we can trace our final canned and labelled product back to the American vessel that caught it! Our tuna is caught in the MSC certified American Albacore Fishing Association (AAFA) fishery in the Pacific Ocean using low impact one-by-one fishing methods – pole & line and troll. Packed by Hand in Oregon and Washington State, our cans are BPA Free.  American Tuna has been ranked as the “Best Specialty Tuna” by Bon Appétit and has been featured as “Tuna you can Trust” by Martha Stewart Living.

  • Community

As well as sustainable and responsible sourcing of our fish, we pride ourselves in supporting coastal communities. The West Coast of the U.S. is reliant on this fishery to support the small ports and towns that make up this beautiful coastline. Supporting American Tuna is supporting the preservation of artisanal fishermen, micro-canneries, and fishing families.

  • Local Sourcing

Our tuna is 100% responsibly and sustainably sourced. American Tuna purchases and processes our tuna from MSC certified one-by-one caught albacore from the American Albacore Fishing Association (AAFA) fishery. We are pioneers in sustainable sourcing of tuna. AAFA was the first tuna fishery in the world to obtain the MSC certification (marine stewardship council, MSC.org) for sustainability in September of 2007 and American Tuna was the first MSC labelled canned tuna in the U.S.

  • Testing

One-by-one Caught Albacore Mercury Levels are well below U.S. and International food safety standards. American Tuna harvests albacore tuna near the surface of the ocean using the sustainable and time-tested “One-by-one” Pole & Line or Troll methods. Younger tuna are naturally low in mercury. From an overall nutritional standpoint, tuna is more diverse in its nutrient content than many people would suspect. It is a source of vitamin B3 (niacin), B1 (thiamine) and B6 (pyridoxine) as well as the minerals phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium. Tuna is a good source of protein and is also a valuable source of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, as well as the antioxidant mineral selenium. American Tuna’s albacore are tested by an independent lab. Testing has confirmed mercury levels are <0.3 ppm. American Tuna’s albacore are tested both at a fishery and finished product level. The American Albacore Fishing Association (AAFA) also tests Albacore catches annually for mercury content.
