Want something that tastes like the French Riviera without leaving your kitchen? Pan Bagnat is essentially a classic Niçoise salad transformed into the perfect sandwich. Rustic, vibrant, and meant to be enjoyed at room temperature making it perfect for the beach or a day at the park. The name literally means "bathed bread," referring to the olive oil and tomato juices that soak into the loaf, creating a sandwich that's greater than the sum of its parts.
American Tuna is the star here. Its firm, hand-packed texture stays beautifully intact, adding rich flavor and satisfying bites that don't get lost among the vegetables. Like many of the world's best sandwiches, this one actually improves after sitting for 30–60 minutes, giving the bread time to absorb all those Mediterranean flavors.
Pair it with a crisp Provençal rosé, a dry Vermentino, or a bright Sauvignon Blanc. If you're looking for something non-alcoholic, sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon feels right at home alongside this picnic classic.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 5 oz. can American Tuna with Salt, gently flaked
- 1 crusty round sandwich roll (about 6–7 inches), ciabatta, or small boule
- 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
- 1 tsp red wine vinegar
- 2 ripe tomatoes, sliced
- ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion
- ¼ cup Niçoise or Kalamata olives, pitted and halved
- 2 hard-boiled eggs, sliced
- A handful of chopped parsley
- 1 Tbsp capers, rinsed
- 4–6 fresh basil leaves
- Freshly ground black pepper
- Flaky sea salt (as needed)
Directions
- Slice the roll in half horizontally and remove a little of the soft interior if needed to make room for the filling. Drizzle both cut sides generously with olive oil and sprinkle with the red wine vinegar.
- Rub the cut side of the bread lightly with a slice of ripe tomato, then layer the remaining tomato slices over the bottom half. Season lightly with flaky sea salt and black pepper.
- In a small bowl mix you red onion, olives, capers, and parsley
- Gently place the tuna over the vegetables in large flakes, including the flavorful oil from the can. Avoid breaking it up too much—the larger pieces create the best texture.
- Top with sliced hard boiled eggs and fresh basil leaves and finish with another drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil and a few grinds of black pepper.
- Close the sandwich and wrap it tightly in parchment paper. Let it rest for 30–60 minutes at room temperature, or refrigerate for up to 2 hours, allowing the bread to soak up the juices and olive oil.
- The sandwich should be juicy but never soggy and every bite should taste of ripe tomatoes, olive oil, and Premium Albacore Tuna.
